Singapore!

So, we thought we’d stay in Singapore a couple days but it turns out we’re staying a week!  Partially due to our own choice and partially because I got the flu / we don’t feel like border crossing on a long weekend.

Arriving from Jakarta, where our taxi drivers got lost (twice) on the way to the airport, I was almost moved to tears by the level of organisation that greeted us at the Singapore airport.  Clear labelled signs told us how to get downtown via public transit and before we knew it we were in the exciting neighbourhood of Little India.  Since neither India nor China are on out trip itinerary we feel real lucky to find these little nuggets of culture in such a modern city and have split our time staying in both Little India and Chinatown.

Little India has colourful buildings, Bollywood music playing in the streets and the smells of glorious curries coming form almost every corner.  Singapore is not a cheap place to visit so we are sharing a packed hostel room with 15 other people and a few mice that we watch in amazement as they scurry around the room and manage to miss every trap set out for them.  As mentioned I got the the flu (all better now) and spent a day, just me and the mice, sleeping it off while Colin explored the HUGE shopping districts.

Once I was better we left all culture behind and joined the masses of international tourists at Universal Studios Singapore.  There were a few attractions that made us chuckle and roll our eyes at their level of cheese ball-ness and then others, like the new Transformers ride, that totally knocked our socks off (just figuratively, it’s way too hot in Singapore to wear socks right now).  It was a fun packed day and we were happy to return to the less chaotic street of our Little India.

In between stuffing our faces with curries and street food we’ve visited some of the sights, gardens, museums, waterfront, shopping etc.  Last night we were in an equally packed dorm room in Chinatown, less mice but more people.  The problem with more people is you increase your odds of having a snorer in the group and at this particular hostel we seem to have hit the jackpot.  The sounds seemed to come from every direction and nothing I did, ipod, earplugs, banging my head repetitively against the wall hoping to lose consciousness, seemed to work so we have moved hostels for a last and final time and have three days left to live it up before we head to Malaysia!
